Hailing from the New York tri-state area, Baba Ali started out in the experimental funk duo Voices Of Black before breaking out on his own in 2017 to release his debut Nomad EP. The EP’s rhythmically hypnotic and bluesy second track Cog in the Wheel quickly became a dancefloor-ready hit, with Baba woefully crooning the soul-sucking routine of nine-to-five life.
Soon after relocating to London, Baba Ali followed up his debut with the electrified foot-stomper I’ve Been Voodoo’d—a subversive reaction to the current climate of political upheaval, division and misinformation gripping both sides of the Atlantic. Although the sound of Baba Ali fuses elements of funk, blues, and post-punk, with lyrics that drift between social commentary and the surreal.
